Interesting Tidbits of Information.

More and more people are making the resolution to buy American. Occasionally we will be posting interesting information we find. Hope you find it interesting as well.

Creating Jobs for USA Community Business.

Americans need jobs and we all can help. Starbucks has teamed up with Opportunity Finance Network® (OFN) which is a group of community lending institutions set up to provide financing to community businesses that need help. In donating to OFN, 100 percent of your donation will help create and sustain jobs in under served communities. To launch this project, the Starbucks Foundation is donating the first $5,000,000.

If you are interested in donating, visit www.CreateJobsforUSA.org and make your credit card donation online. For donations of $5 dollars and more, you will receive an “Indivisible” wristband as a thank you to wear proudly as a symbol of your support.

Chopsticks Made in America.

People in China are eating with chopsticks that are made in America. A Georgia company is not only making chopsticks but is significantly boosting the local economy by providing fifty new jobs. The chopsticks are made of poplar and sweet gum trees from the area that apparently make a comfortable and sturdy eating utensil for millions across the world.

Georgia Chopsticks is producing about two million chopsticks every day. They're selling these primarily to Chinese supermarkets but they are also helping to feed hungry people in Japan, Korea and the U.S.

Inexpensive Facts.

If each American spent as little as an extra $3.33 on goods that are made in the USA, it could create about 10,000 additional jobs in our country. Three dollars/four dollars is not alot! Sure times are tuff and maybe you're the one out of a job, but this is a small investment that could end up helping you out and others in need of a job. That's a powerful piece of knowledge and a small price to pay for American consumers. To help create jobs for such a small amount.

The Smithsonian.

Did you know that the Smithsonian is pledging to convert all products in their gift shop to American Made only items? No more pins made in China or T-Shirts made in Honduras or postcards from S. Korea.

Apparently some of these manufacturers are warning the Smithsonian that by switching to American Made will not only cost them more but those cost will be passed on to the visitors of the museum. I'd pay more - would you? This according to allgov.com.

Update:

Here is something I just read from the Washington Post.

A gift shop selling only items designed and made in the U.S. opens today on the third floor of the National Museum of American History, fulfilling the wishes of lawmakers who insisted that the taxpayer-funded museum should do its part to promote American businesses.

The experiment may mean higher prices for tourists but could pave the way for similar “Buy American” efforts at other Smithsonian shops.

Good Business Sense.

In 2005, Chinese produced parts arrived at US destination ports on an average of 22 percent less than comparable products made domestically. By the end of 2008, the average price gap dropped to 5.5 percent.

Why? Chinese labor costs are rising, with average manufacturing wages increasing nearly 70 percent between 2002 and 2006. Another important factor is transportation. Freight costs are increasingly offsetting, and even eclipsing, any savings from cheaper labor.

In a recent survey, 61 percent of manufacturing executives are considering relocating factories back to the US or Mexico from lower wage rate Asian countries because of rising logistics and transportation costs.
