Here's something you can read from the Bureau of Consumer Protection about complying with the Made in USA standard.
Finding Made in USA.
So maybe you may have noticed a lot of what is stocked on store shelves these days is Not American Made. If you want to find American Made products you have to really search the shelves and go out of your way to find them. But; in the end, your better off. You've bought a product that is better quality.
To buy American Made products it's worth it to do a little research before going into the store. You can go online, send an email to the store, or you can call the store and find out if they carry the item you are looking to purchase and if it is Made in USA.
If you are already in the store ask a store employee for help or if you can't find a store employee and say you're looking for - say light bulbs - and the first package you pick up is made in China, then skoosh down a little ways. Yes skoosh and just keep skooshing down the isle until you find the one that says "Made in America".
It may take a little more time but it's worth it. Just check the labels.
If you do not find what you are looking for in our directory, don't stop, keep on searching, although our directory database is growing, we most likely don't have it all - not yet anyway.
If you have American Made Products you want to get noticed, enter them not only in our directory but others as well. Directory Bin is another directory you might want to use to spread the knowledge.
What Else Can You Do?
Something else you can do which is something we have started doing - is contact local businesses; home improvement stores, drug stores, etc., send an email and ask them if they can include in their website search criteria: Made in USA, Made in America, something to identify made in America products to make our searching easier.
We have not yet noticed a change, but we continue to send a very nice email every now and then. I don't believe this should cause any harm to their business, but we will keep trying.
Update. I have asked a couple of home improvement stores in my area to add Made in America, Made in USA, etc. to their search functionality and have noticed some of them doing it. Now I can get online, find what I'm looking for, then go into the store and buy it. This cuts my time having to hunt the shelves for Made in America products while in these stores. Yeah!
Buy handmade craft items from local crafters and bazaars. There are many things you can purchase from places like this such as, jewelry, wooden toys and furniture, rugs, baskets, handmade sweaters, pottery, decorative glass items, handmade scarves, aprons, and much more. There is one craft fair I do locally where I by teas. The herbs used to make the teas is grown in the backyard of the woman that makes it and let me tell you - it is the best tea I've had. Artisans like these people are amazing at what they do and sometimes you can custom order items from them.
Shop at local farmers markets or produce stands for farm fresh fruits and vegetables. You can find handmade crafts, honey made locally, and always great, friendly customer service.
Shop at consignment stores and thrift shops. You can find a variety of treasures. I collect old Corning Ware, you can usually find something you are looking for and a very reasonable price. When you go, expect to spend some time browsing the shelves, but it's worth it.
